Stamford is located about 30 miles from Manhattan, in the Bridgeport-Stamford Norwalk Danbury Metro area which is part of the Greater New York metropolitan area. Stamford is home to nine Fortune 500 businesses, as well as several large corporate divisions. This makes Stamford the largest financial district outside of New York City itself in the New York metropolitan area, and one of the highest concentrations of companies in the United States. The Siwanoy Native American inhabitants of the region knew Stamford as Rippowam, and it was also referred to as such by the very first European settlers to the area.
