The city is located at the head of Narragansett Bay, at the mouth of the Providence River. Providence was one of the first developed cities in the nation and became known for its garment manufacturing and subsequent machine tool, jewelry, and silverware industries. The population of providence is over 175,000 square miles and 21 square miles. The name was originally Fort Utah but in 1850 it was changed into "Provo," in honor of an early French-Canadian trapper, tienne Provost. Many different companies and organizations power the economy in Provo, including over 100 restaurants, two shopping centers, several universities and schools, a variety of small businesses, and many major foreign businesses. Provo's population is over 110,000 and has an area of 44 miles.
